The thing about really good writing is that it is seamless. Really really good writing doesn't feel contrived at all. The words seem to just flow from the writer to the reader. If fancy metaphors or symbolism are used, they don't seem fancy; they just seem like the only natural way to convey the action.
This personal essay (Bra Mitzvah: Becoming a Man Through Lingerie by Joshua David Stein) is really good writing. Also, insider's tip: Joanna in the story is the same Joanna at A Cup of Jo!
